Physical therapy is part of medicine which develops planning, organizing and implementing programs for care of individuals whose ability to function is impaired or threatened by disease or injury. Physiotherapy primary focus is treatment by physical modalities some individuals with neuro-muscular, pulmonary, cardiovascular disorders and evaluation their functions related to disorder during the treatment. Physical therapy incorporate a broad spectrum of activities such as direct patient care, multidisciplinary interchange, supervision, teaching, administration, researches and community services.

General Description

Physiotherapy department Al Salama hospital located on the 5th floor of Hospital building and placed in 9 separated rooms and reception with waiting area. There are 2 doctor rooms and 6 treatment rooms and mini-Gym. Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation service is provided by 2 physicians specialized in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Rheumatology, 3 physiotherapist technicians, 1 office-nurse.

Physicians reveal the indications, contraindication for some physic- modalities, create physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs, and control the effectiveness of physiotherapy and rehabilitation in every individual case. Also some kind of treatment such Laser Therapy, Shock-Wave are provided by physician or under his present supervision. Routine physiotherapy sessions according doctor’s programs are provided by physiotherapist technicians. Office nurse follow patient’s and department’s documentation, additional diagnostic investigations request from department.

There are next Physical Means and Modalities which are widely used for Physical Treatment and Rehabilitation of pathologies of Loco-Motor System, Central Nerve System and Peripheral Neuron Diseases, also Diabetic Polyneuropathy, in Post -Trauma Rehabilitation.

List of Physical Modalities

  • Electrical Therapy and Electrical Neuro and Muscular Stimulation 7 types of low Frequency electrotherapy and stimulation automatic and manual programs. Back and neck pain management requests TENS current in Surge or Burst Mode in 100% cases. Micro-current in 4 modes successfully used in treatment Chronic pain conditions, also bursitis, tenosynovitis, igament injury, sprain. EMS programs includes reeducation of denervated muscles, inhibition of spasticity for spastic muscles, strengthening of muscle power and muscles endurance that used for main rehabilitation cases after stroke, Infant Cerebral Palsy and postoperative cases/ACL plastic, meniscectomy and other.

  • Ultrasound Therapy/ 1 MHz, and 3 MHz/. It‘s used for treatment osteoarthritis, myositis, tennis elbow, in sub-acutive period of ligamentitis, bursitis. Head of 3MHz so effective for treatment superficial subcutaneous pathology such as rib chongropathy, intrafalangeal joints arthritis, hand ligamentitis.

  • Cervical and Lumbar Computerized Automatic Traction/6 programs/ suggests for treatment of Sciatica, brachia- or radiculagia due to discogenic lesion of lumbar spine and cervical spine, scoliosis with low back pain or cervical pain and fixed deformation.

  • Short Wave Therapy/ constant and intermittent modes/ is prescribed for acute none-rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis and after effusion evacuation. Chest Short Wave therapy also beneficial for patient with chronic pneumonia and bronchitis.

  • Hilt-Laser Therapy/ High-Frequency Impulses that combines with High Peak Power of Laser Irradiation- Chopped Laser Waves/. Penetration of Laser Irradiation during this treatment reaches 5-6 cm. It ‘s used for deep treatment of pathology such as Osteoarthritis of the Knee , Hip joints, shoulder impingement and other deep located pathology deep traumatic edema, muscular trauma and hematomes, tendonitis and other overstress conditions of loco-motor system

  • Laser Combo Therapy/Traditional Laser Waves in constant and intermittent modes/.   • Shock-Wave Therapy/extra corporal treatment of some painful points by low frequency acoustic pulses/. It’s indicated and provided for patient with calcanear spur, tennis elbow, calcificates and chronic tendonitis which bothering patients by years and fully resistant to routine physiotherapy.

  • Remedial Exercises with Accessories. Remedial exercises play a big role in rehabilitation of handicapped patient with severe motor disorders. Patients after stroke, with peripheral neuron pathology, congenital hip dislocation, Erb’s palsy and other received treatment in mini-gym. Cycle, treadmill, stepper are also used for training post operative and rehabilitation cases. Time of exercises therapy 15-30 min to 1 hour.

  • Mechanotherapy/CPM knee, hip, ankle and shoulder, Wrist and Elbow Joints mobilization machines/. Continues Passive Mode machines are used in earlier postoperative period from the first postoperative day, in operation ward and continued to apply later after ACL plastic, meniscectomy, shoulder joint revision, arthroscopy of shoulder, ankle and elbow joints.

  • Local Massage of Affected Part of Body/arm, leg, back, neck and collar zone

Patient service and Physiotherapy procedure:

  • Physiotherapy treatment gives out to patient after physician - physiatrist consultation.

  • During primary consultation physician examines a patient, provides functional assessment, make clinical/functional diagnosis and create physical treatment program, which fixed in special Physiotherapy Card.

  • Every 3-5 sessions, during follow up, physician repeats assessment and evaluate efficacy of prescribed program and correct it when it’s needed.

  • At the end, during final consultation, physiatrist rapidly evaluates patient functional status and efficacy of provided treatment course again and gives final recommendations to patient if it’s needed.

  • Physiotherapy gives out to patient by physiotherapist technician or working nurse as physiotherapy procedure, on the basis of prescribed physical treatment program in appointed time. Technician refers patient back to physician –physiatrist after finishing prescribed procedures already mentioned in Physiotherapy Card.

Working hours and availability of stuff:

Patients can receive physiotherapy treatment from 8 am to 12 pm all days of week except of Friday.

Staff is available in 2 shifts:

  • 1/ From 8 am- 4 pm : 2 male+ 3 female technicians

  • 2/From 4pm -12 midnight :2 male +3 female technicians

Complexity of patient population:

The population served by the Physical Therapy Department ranges from the pediatric to geriatric, from 2 years to 80 years. Patient requiring physical therapy presents to the Department with variety of syndromes and functional disabilities Complexities range from short term and/or minor impairment to chronic or acute and/or major impairment. The majority of patients which receiving physical treatment present acute or chronic back pain, neuro –muscular pathology, also after trauma of musculo-sceletal system, after orthopedic or neurosurgery operations.
